How to play Galaxy Defender

A formation of 50 aliens marches from side to side and steps down whenever it reaches an edge. Move your ship along the bottom with the left and right keys and press Space to shoot. Four shields give you cover, but every shot chips pieces out of them. On a touch screen, hold and drag to steer and your ship fires by itself.

Aliens in the top row are worth 30 points, the next two rows 20 and the bottom two rows 10. A saucer sometimes crosses the top for 50 to 300 points. Clearing a wave earns a bonus, and the next wave starts lower and moves faster. You have three lives, but the game ends at once if the aliens reach your row.

Tips

• ▸Only two of your shots can be on screen at once, so firing from close range lets you shoot again sooner.
• ▸Clear the outer columns first. The formation then has further to travel before it steps down, which buys you time.
• ▸Only the lowest alien in each column fires, so watch the columns directly above you.
• ▸Your shots destroy alien shots they hit, which can save you from a hit you cannot dodge.

How do you score more points in Galaxy Defender?

Pick off the 30-point aliens in the top row and shoot the saucer, worth 50, 100, 150 or 300 at random. Each wave you clear also adds 100 points times the wave number.

Why do the aliens speed up?

The formation moves faster as fewer aliens remain, and each new wave starts faster, lower down and fires more often.

What happens if the aliens reach the bottom?

The game is over straight away, however many lives you have left.
