How to play Sliding Puzzle
Sliding Puzzle is a grid of numbered tiles with one gap. Click or tap a tile next to the gap to slide it in, or use the arrow keys or WASD. Put the tiles in order, with 1 in the top-left, reading left to right and row by row, and the gap in the bottom-right. Tiles turn green when they're in place.
Choose 3x3 (8 tiles), 4x4 (the classic 15-puzzle) or 5x5 (24 tiles). Every shuffle is made with random moves from the solved position, so it can always be solved. The timer starts with your first move, and your time is your score, so faster is better. Moves are counted too, and Shuffle deals a fresh board.
Tips
- βΈSolve the top row, then the next, and so on. Once a row is done, leave it alone.
- βΈWith two rows left, switch to solving column by column from the left.
- βΈFinish a row as a pair: park the last tile where the second-to-last belongs, put the second-to-last under it, then slide both in.
- βΈMoving the gap around a 2x2 square rotates its three tiles, the key move for repositioning a tile.
Sliding Puzzle FAQ
- Is every sliding puzzle solvable?
- Yes. Each board is shuffled with hundreds of random legal moves from the solved position, so it can always be put back in order.
- What is the 15-puzzle?
- The 4x4 version, with 15 numbered tiles and one gap. It's the default size here.
- How do the arrow keys work?
- Each arrow slides the tile beside the gap in that direction. The left arrow, for example, moves the tile to the right of the gap leftwards.
